Life in Nigeria.
Life in Nigeria is typical of many African countries. Most people are very poor. In fact 60% live below the so called poverty line, which is meant to be about $1-$2 a day. But for others, the country offers plenty of challenges, adventure and great riches.
In cities like Lagos you'll find traffic congested roads full of people including kids hawking their trade, choking traffic, extremely high levels of noise pollution and impatient motorists. All making it very lively and challenging. However, Nigeria is a vast country and there are other places where life is quieter and more mundane. But most people live in the cities and go to their villages during Christmas, Eid or other festivals.
For the adventurous or business person, life in the cities can be lots of fun once you learn to tolerate the chaos and human behavior that stems from poverty. Nigerians are culturally rich, welcoming and entertaining. The temperature is often in the mid thirty Celsius. The dry season is from October to March. It can get very humid too but most cars and places put on air-condition. When in Lagos or Abuja, I wake up early and leave the house around 7 am to go to work. I try to avoid being out in the hot sun between noon and four pm if I can help it because it can get quite uncomfortable. I would advise renting or buying a new car or travel with family members that own one. Public transport don't have AC. I use okada the infamous bike transport to avoid traffic and so do most people in Lagos. But I won't recommend it if it's your first time in Lagos. Some people may find the environment and life in Nigeria very tough because Lagos is overpopulated and known for its 24/7/365 commercial buzz. There is always somebody somewhere trying to sell something. People have to survive and some like area boys get aggressive when demanding money for something invented like protection or money for parking. Entertainment wise, the choices are many. Live bands, hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs provide good Nigerian food and music. I often go into bars to watch football whilst eating cat fish pepper soup with a bottle of Star, Heineken or Guiness. I love it. I stay close to Surulere, Victoria Island and Ikoyi because these areas are where you will find the most skilled and influential business professionals and entertainers. If you're reading this, chances are your friends are relatively rich and you'll be living in a nice part of town and visiting all the nice places. You'll find plenty of modern restaurants serving local or international dishes, bars, hotels and a vibrant array of markets or shopping malls. Upmarket real estate, modern satellite TV, 3G mobile communications and an intelligent media are all there for you to enjoy. Stay way from the slums or help them build a house or running water.
