Oil and Nigeria.

The business of Oil and Nigeria can be very complex. The country produces 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day and account for 10% of US consumption. The main oil fields are found in the Niger Delta region of the country( red in the diagram), where the Niger river empties into the Gulf of guinea.

The Niger Delta region

The oil fields include Bonga, Cawthron Channel, EA, Edop, Ekkulama, Escravos Beach, Forcados and more. Warri and Port harcourt in Delta and Rivers States respectively, are the main oil towns, which house the largest oil refineries in Nigeria.

Oil companies in Nigeria.

niger delta coastline Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil, Total and Chevron are the biggest oil companies in Nigeria. These companies or their subsidiaries explore oil fields and produce up to 90% of our daily quota under joint contract agreements with the government.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation or NNPC is the public oil company responsible for awarding contracts and managing the oil industry.

There are many controversial issues around the subject of oil in Nigeria that make the headlines. An example is the failure of past governments to diversify the economy or invest in the maintenance of public infrastructure. Those guys were corrupt.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is a well organized militia group fighting for total control of the Niger delta. They maybe responsible for political instability in the region, which increases oil prices.
