A short history of Lagos Nigeria.
Now I am not an historian, so don't expect some academic paper on the history of Lagos. But I'll try to feed the minds of the curious. The first settlers on the island were a small Yoruba group who used to live just beyond the Lagoon along the River Ogun and were ruled by a King, The Olofin ( Law Lord). The island was known by the indigenous people as Eko ( pronounced like A-cho). After a war between the early settlers and neighboring Benin, Eko became a southern outpost of the Benin empire. The King of Benin ruled by proxy through a military commander whose title is the Ashipa ( the first to kill). All the Kings of Lagos up until this day are descendants of the Ashipa family. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Portuguese explorers were visited the Island. Eko became known as Lagos, which in Portuguese means Lakes. By the 18th century empires developed as trade in slaves and commodities thrived, until the British outlawed slave trade in all her territories in 1807. By 1861 Lagos was officially a British protectorate. Today Lagos stands as a mega city in the world with a population of about 8 - 10 million. Most of Nigeria's wealth is concentrated in the city. It is home to the largest financial institutions and manufacturing plants in Nigeria.

I travel to Lagos and find it chaotic with lots of hustle and struggle. But beneath the surface is an enterprising culture of rich, hardworking, business people who enjoy Lagos and its social life.
I have shared some pictures that I took and would like you to do the same. So upload your pictures from your travels or every day life in Lagos. I know you have a good story to tell too.
